TitleElliot, Harry: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProfessor Elliot's researches have been primarily in the field of cosmic rays and high energy solar particles emitted from solar flares. The group he has built up at Imperial College has a well-established international reputation in these areas.
One of his most important contributions has been the development of the externally quenched G.M. counter as a reliable instrument for the long term study of cosmic ray intensity variations, a technique that was subsequently adopted internationally as the basis of the standard muon monitors used during the International Geophysical Year. The same techniques used in conjunction with directionally sensitive cosmic ray monitors has enabled Professor Elliot in collaboration with his group, to clarify the nature of the cosmic ray solar daily variation, to demonstrate its relation to the cycle of solar activity and to establish that the variation arises directly from solar rather than terrestrial causes.
He initiated satellite work in this country on energetic particles and magnetic fields in space and has made significant contributions to the understanding of solar. Recently published results from a long series of underground cosmic ray measurements by the candidate and his associated are an extremely important contribution to our understanding of the propagation of cosmic rays in the Galaxy.
