CitationDistinguished for his work on the association and dissociation of macromolecules. In early work with E.K. Rideal using new and elegant experimental techniques, he proposed a theory (now well established as the Gilbert-Rideal Theory) for the acid-titration of fibrous proteins which provided a quantitative explanation of wool-dyeing.
In his extensive studies of starches, replacement of traditional methods of dispersion led to an upward revision of the accepted molecular weight of starch fractions by an order of magnitude.
In the last decade he has done outstanding work to provide a theory (the Gilbert theory) of the shape of reaction boundaries in electrophoresis and sedimentation. With R.C. Jenkins he has put his theory on a sound mathematical basis and has provided a whole series of physical models which can be applied quantitatively to experimental data on dissociating protein systems. A list of 45 papers is appended.
