TitleKelly, Anthony: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the knowledge and understanding of the strength of solids. His experimental work on age hardening alloy systems showed clearly the distinct effects produced by fine and coarse precipitates, particularly on the work-hardening characteristics of commercial metals and alloys. This work subsequently led him to develop quantitatively the principles of the strengthening of ductile matrix materials by fibre-reinforcement. He has also made important contributions to the theory of brittleness in solids, particularly concerning the influence of crystallographic factors and types of atomic bonding.
