TitleMitchell, George Francis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationMitchell is internationally acknowledged for his unique role in the establishment and advancement of Quaternary studies in Ireland and western Britain, and for his acute insight and stimulating originality. Successive tenure of a lectureship in Geology, a readership in Irish Archaeology and a chair in Quaternary Studies shows his breadth of approach. His numerous papers on the Pleistocene history of Ireland include pollen-analytic studies that established post-glacial vegetational history closely correlated with archaeological cultures, and with human exploitation. They greatly advanced knowledge of plants and animals now extinct in Ireland, clarified past changes of land and sea-level, and documented glacial advances and retreats, finally shewing how our penultimate glaciation extended south to the Scillies.
