TitlePereira, Helio Gelli: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationHas greatly contributed to knowledge of 3 families of viruses.
(1) Recognized internationally as an authority on adenoviruses, he has made exact studies of their biological effects, structure and antigenic composition. Working with several colleagues, he has separated 3 main structural components and discovered the functions of each. (2) Has compared influenza viruses from man, horses and birds, obtained recombinants between them and uncovered cross-relationships: a matter relevant to the possible origin of pandemic strains from animal sources. (3) Was leader of the laboratory team which first cultivated a common cold virus, a result leading up to the regularly reproducible cultivation of rhinoviruses by Tyrrell.
