TitleDavidson, John Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDavidson is distinguished for his successful application of science to a number of problems in chemical engineering. His work has included the study of thin liquid films and accompanying mass-transfer in packed columns, and also various aspects of the mechanics of single bubbles and swarms of bubbles. However his principal contributions over the last ten years have been in the industrially important field of fluidisation. Davidson's work, theoretical and experimental, has thrown much light on the mechanics of fluidised beds and has simplified the study of a variety of particulate systems. It has also made possible the analysis of chemically-reacting fluidised systems. The work has been characterised by scientific rigour accompanied by a keen sense of practical utility; it has made a profound impact on industrial thinking in the field of fluidisation.
