TitleHeine, Volker: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationDr. Heine is a leader in the developments that have led to a quantitative understanding of the behaviour of metals and alloys. With J. C. Phillips he introduced the concept of the "pseudopotential" and so showed how the methods of perturbation theory could be applied to this problem. This powerful method has in his hands led to a detailed understanding of the structure of such metals as mercury and gallium, major advances in the theory of surface states and to progress in many other problems.
