Title | Matthews, Drummond Hoyle: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Since 1958 Dr Matthews has worked on the geology and geophysics of the ocean floor. Since 1966 he has been in charge of the group in Cambridge. Most of his work has been in the N.E. Atlantic and in the N.W. Indian Ocean. He is best known for his work with F.J. Vine on the explanation of the oceanic magnetic lineations in terms of sea floor spreading and continental drift. Earlier he had elucidated the relation of the Carlsberg Ridge to the Owen fracture zone and the Gulf of Aden. Recently he has discovered a fan-shaped magnetic patter which probably records the opening of the Bay of Biscay and has studied Rockall Bank which appears to be a continental fragment. |
