Title | Philip, John Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the complex mathematical physics of the soil-plant-atmosphere system, Dr. Philip has pioneered the study of this system as a single continuum and thrown much light on the complexities of behaviour in its component parts. Outstanding have been his work in infiltration, in fluid transport in porous media, and behaviour of water in cells, with applications ranging widely in soil physics and hydrology, ecology, and plant physiology. His achievement has been to bring frameworks and system, and hence comprehension, into fields characterized by a wealth of ill-assorted old knowledge. He has helped to identify the essential concepts and formalise the processes, and shown great skill in the choice of mathematical methods for solving the resulting equations. This work has transformed the interpretation of experimental data on water in soils and plants which in turn has stimulated many useful new experiments in and outside Australia. |
