TitleStuart, John Trevor: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his accomplishments in theoretical fluid mechanics, particularly concerning hydrodynamic stability and the transition from laminar to turbulent flow. He is an internationally recognized authority on the non-linear processes whereby disturbances in unstable flows evolve: in several ways, such as by elucidating the role of Reynolds stresses, his papers have substantially advanced the understanding of this notoriously difficult subject. He has also made important contributions to the theory of laminar boundary layers, especially notable being his work on the steady streaming that can be caused by the oscillations of a solid body in a fluid.
