TitleYoung, Pierre Henry John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationPierre Young is distinguished for his technical contribution to the design of Bristol engines exemplified by the Olympus, the Orpheus, and the Pegasus. He is currently the Chief Engineer of the Olympus 593 for the Concorde. His main field of endeavour has been in the determination of the competent efficiencies in the above gas turbine engines and the improvement thereof. His original calculation of the overall supersonic performance of the Olympus 593 engine in the Concorde aircraft, has thrown great light on the importance of the factors involved, such as the engine cycle, the performance of the air intake and the final propulsive nozzle, and the influence of the weight and drag of the powerplant. He has initiated a new formula which interprets all the performance variables of the engine in terms of either payload or take-off weight, and this formula is now being generally accepted by the aircraft constructor and the Airlines, who have opted to purchase the Concorde. He has shown great expertise in the solution of mechanical problems in the engine, including the vibration of the compressor blades, and the detailed mechanical modifications which are necessary to obtain a reliable engine developing 40, 000 thrust horsepower for a weight of 6,200 lbs.
