CitationDistinguished for his original contributions, prior to and in the early years of the war, to the theory and practice of the use of radar in aircraft for the interception of other aircraft or the detection of surface vessels. He later contributed to the adaption of radar to the problems of air traffic control and navigation.
He inspired and supported his colleagues in the early Australian researches in radio astronomy to which he made a personal major contribution to bringing into being the large radio telescope at Parkes, N.S.W. He played a major role in the instigation and successful realization of the Anglo-Australian telescope.
He initiated, and with his colleagues, developed the experimental observation of cloud phenomena in situ from aircraft using novel techniques. He put forward new concepts bearing on the formation of rain particularly that of coalesence. He participated in the design and execution of the extensive investigations in Australia of the artificial stimulation of rainfall proving practical possibilities in defined circumstances. He stimulated interest in this subject in other countries where he assisted in the design of experiments.
