Citation | Distinguished for his researches in pure and applied geochemistry and particularly his studies of the distribution of radioactive elements. As such his work bears on the fundamental problem of heat generation in the crust of the Earth and the assessment of useful energy sources. Bowie has made important contributions to our knowledge of the distribution of such elements in the U.K., Africa and Canada. He has developed techniques for the identification of ore minerals and techniques for chemical analyses of Earth materials, by remote sending from the land surface, the air and on the sea bed. He is now recognised as a world authority on the terrestrial distribution of such elements both from academic and environmental points of view. He has also made valuable contributions to our knowledge of the opaque and radioactive phases in lunar materials. |
