TitleMayo, Paul De: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHis researches have covered three main areas of chemistry. The first was the elucidation of the structure of complex natural products including griseoviridin, marasmic acid, primycin, copaene, chapparin, senegenin, helminthosporal, ergoxanthan and others. The second area is that of organic photochemistry. These studies have led to the recognition of new reactions, their application in synthesis and the detailed investigation of mechanisms from their physico-chemical aspect.
The most recent (since 1967) area is the development of the high temperature-low contact time technique (flash thermolysis) for the discovery of new reactions and the generation of reactive or unstable species. So far new rearrangments have been found and the existence of the transient 'sulphene' unequivocally demonstrated.
The two volume "Molecular Rearrangements" of which he was the editor is now classic.
