Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to protein chemistry and immunology. His early work was concerned with the relationship between the structure and biological activity of enzymes, and led to an understanding of the basic mode of action of phosphoglucomutase. He was among the pioneers in studying the amino acid sequences of immunoglobulins and his experiments have advanced our knowledge of the basis of antibody variation and specificity. His studies on myeloma proteins showed the chemical basis of the antigenic division of human immunoglobulins into types, classes and subclasses. This work led to current views on the evolution and genetic origin of immunoglobulin. His studies on the disulphide bonds of different types of immunoglobulins established the constancy of the intrachain bonds in contrast with the variability of the interchain bonds. He has been responsible for much of the recent rapid increase in knowledge of immunoglobulin structure. Recently he has purified the messenger RNA for the light chains and has shown that it produces a precursor protein, which is then processed to the normal light chain. |
