TitleSlater, Edward Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Two letters attached to certificate.
CitationMade important contributions to the identification and the physiological role of the components of the respiratory chain, especially of the various cytochromes b, iron - sulphur proteins and other iron containing substances. Showed that the binding of certain inhibitors of oxidative phosphorylation acting at different sites (antimycin on electron transport, oligomycin on the coupling between electron transport and oxidative phosphorylation and aurovertin in the ATP synthesising enzyme) can be positively co-operative, the degree of co-operativity depending on the state of the mitochondrial membrane. Demonstrated negative co-operative of a ligand to an enzyme (NAD to glyceraldehydes phosphate dehydrogenase); this has important implications for the mechanisms of co-operative binding generally.
