TitleSlatyer, Ralph Owen: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on water relations of plants, ranging from ecological aspects based on field experiments and theory, through investigations of single plants under controlled environmental conditions, to biophysical and biochemical explanations based on laboratory experiments. He contributed procedures for measuring water status, stomatal resistance and exchange rates of water vapour and carbon-dioxide. HE was the first to show that permanent wilting percentage depends on osmotic characteristics of the plant, not on the soil. His revised terminology for the expression of water stress has been universally accepted. His book, "Plant-Water Relationships", is an authoritative and critical work. When Associate-Chief, Division of Land Research, C.S.I.R.O., he played a major role in applied research programmes based on physiology and ecology, especially for aid and monsoon areas.
