TitleWalker, George Patrick Leonard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of vulcanicity in and around the Atlantic. It is largely through Walker's work that eastern Iceland is probably the best understood portion of the mid-Atlantic Ridge. He was the first to establish the zones of zeolites in Ireland and Iceland; the first recognition of regional metasomatic changes in rocks from the Atlantic. Other advances include the better understanding of the behaviour of acid and basic magmas during eruption and of the structural relationships of the volcanic rocks of eastern Iceland. He has used this knowledge to produce new evidence of crustal dilation. In extending his work to the Azores and other Atlantic Islands, he has studied the productivity of volcanoes. His work is remarkable for the manner in which he has been able to deduce structural relationships of regional importance from detailed local investigations.
