CitationWeck carried out important pioneer investigations into residual stresses and their effect on the behaviour of welded structures, particularly in relation to brittle fracture; initiated first full scale fatigue tests on welded structures; demonstrated possibility of brittle fractures propagating from fatigue cracks.
As Director of British Welding Research Association instrumental in starting decisive investigations on brittle fracture and other fatigue. Equally important work has been carried out in several other fields, acknowledged and used internationally. First friction welder, first oxygen laser cutting and practical laser welding equipment were also developed. Under Weck, B.W.R.A. has attained a pre-eminent position in the world as a welding research laboratory.
