Title | Baker, Peter Frederick: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1973 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | With A.L. Hodgkin and T.I.Shaw, Baker was responsible for introducing the 'garden roller' methods for extruding the axoplasm from squid giant axons, and replacing it with artificial solutions. He has played a large part in the subsequent exploitation of this important technique, which has added significantly to our knowledge of the role of intracellular ions in excitable tissues. Next he turned to an examination of the relationship between phosphorous metabolism and the active transport of ions, in squid axons and in crab nerve, and participated in the discovery of the coupling between the fluxes of calcium and sodium. This led him to make further investigations into the transport and metabolism of calcium, and most recently of magnesium, in nerve, which are actively continuing. |
