TitlePickavance, Thomas Gerald: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1975
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his early work in constructing the Liverpool cyclotron and the research he did with it in the Tube Alloys project during the war and on nuclear structure. He was later in charge of the construction and the research programme of the Harwell cyclotron and eventually leader of the Accelerator Group there. During this time he directed studies of many novel accelerators which culminated in the construction at the Rutherford Laboratory, of which he was the first Director, of the 50 MeV proton linear accelerator and the 8 GeV proton synchroton, Nimrod. He made crucial contributions to the creation of CERN. He was later Director of the Nuclear Physics Division of the Science Research Council and Chairman of the European Committee on Future Accelerators. Pickavance's exceptional contribution to his subject has been the skilful, unselfish and unsparing way he has made research facilities available for his fellow nuclear physicists and helped them solve the problems of using large accelerators. He has played a vital role in enabling physicists, particularly in the universities, in this country and in Europe to do elementary particle physics on the highest international level, and he played a major part in bringing to fruition the 300 GeV proton synchroton project at CERN.
