TitleRees, Hubert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1969
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of chromosome organisation and control. He has shown experimentally how genes act and interact in controlling the behaviour of the chromosomes; how mutation and recombination produce new variation in the chromosome phenotype; and how selection acts on this variation. He has provided evidence of adaptive differences between natural populations in the frequencies of recombination they show and has demonstrated the part that B chromosomes can play in regulating the frequency of recombination in the chromosomes of the regular complement.
He has established that the amount of nuclear DNA can differ markedly between species of a genus, and has shown that these differences must be due to extensive duplication or deletion of segments within the chromosomes. There is thus evidence of considerable redundancy in the DNA content. In some genera evolution is towards increasing DNA but in others towards decreasing it, so providing further evidence that a substantial amount of nuclear DNA may be dispensable.
