TitleStone, Francis Gordon Albert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1975
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contribution to organometallic chemistry and co-ordination chemistry, having published over three hundread (sic) papers. His early research was directed towards and understanding of the kinetic lability and stability of various boron adducts. Subsequent interest has been concerned with organometallic chemistry of transition metals and carbonyl complexes. In these fields he has made many contributions that are of major importance. His research has been particularly successful in establishing the nature of the interaction of these molecules with a wide range of fluoro carbon derivatives, and carboranes, and the utility in preparing unstable organic molecules with the aid of a metal atom.
The work has been fundamental in an understanding of many problems in organometallic chemistry, particularly the stability of low oxidation states, orthometallation reactions, fluxionality, polynuclear complexes and the bonding characteristics of both sigma and pi bonded organic molecules to metal centres.
