TitlePasquill, Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr F. Pasquill is distinguished for his theoretical and experimental studies of turbulence and diffusion in the atmospheric boundary layer which are incorporated in some 40 scientific papers published over 30 years. Following a definitive study of evaporation from plane free-liquid surfaces into a turbulent air stream which was published in 1943, Dr Pasquill carried out important investigations of the complex problem of natural evaporation from grassland which established a practical basis for the measurement. Later Dr Pasquill developed methods for the direct measurement of the statistics of atmospheric turbulence and initiated some of the earliest experimental studies of atmospheric diffusion over distances of around 50 Km. He has also contributed significantly to theoretical aspects of atmospheric turbulence and their application to the practical problem of estimating the dispersion of smoke. His method of allowing for meteorological factors in estimating pollution concentration is in world-wide use, and his book on Atmospheric Diffusion, published in 1962, is highly regarded as one of the few authoritative texts in this field.
