CitationDistinguished for his contributions to solid state chemistry and surface chemistry, and especially for a long series of investigations on the part played by structural imperfections - dislocations or irregularly oriented molecules - in reactions that take place in or on crystalline solutions. His work is characterised by experimental elegance and technical virtuosity, and ranges over the entire field of solid state chemistry. He has made major contributions to the study of the oxidation, catalytic properties and recrystallization of graphite, and is acknowledge as an authority in that field. He has shown the importance of dislocations as initiating sites for reaction in a range of inorganic solids; in opening up the subject of structural faults in molecular, organic crystals, he has coupled the study of their role of loci for reaction with work on energy transfer, electron transport and trapping processes. He has contributed largely to the application of high energy photoelectron spectroscopy to solid state chemistry, including investigations of the band structure of ionic crystals and layer lattice compounds, and was one of the first to show that ESCA and Auger spectroscopy could be used to study submonolayer adsorption and surface reactions.
