TitleAshby, Michael Farries: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1977
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHis work has illuminated very important problems in materials science, eg dispersion hardening, the migration of particles through solids, dislocation nucleation, diffusional creep, grain boundary sliding, the deformation of cell structures and others by a rare combination of clear physical insight, development of simple mathematical models and elegant experiments. He has pioneered the important and fruitful concepts of deformation and fracture maps which display in a single field the area of dominance of specific flow and fracture mechanisms. These are being most useful to engineers, metallurgists, ceramists and geologists.
