TitleLaughton, Sir Anthony Seymour: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1978
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr Laughton is widely known for his work in oceanography and marine geophysics, and particularly for his work on the geological evolution of the Gulf of Aden and its relationship to the mid-ocean ridge system. During the past five years he has successfully used the long range side scan sonar GLORIA for studies of the tectonic fabric of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge giving data that has led to a greater understanding of the rifting processes on slow spreading ridges. His involvement in the Deep Sea Drilling Project led to work on the evolution of the North Atlantic, and he is now playing an important role in the U.K. participation in the International Phase of Ocean Drilling. In support of his geophysical studies he has been responsible for raising the standard of bathymetric mapping of the world's oceans. He now advises the U.K. Government, and the U.N. on matters relating to the Law of the Sea, and Harwell on problems of radioactive waste disposal in the ocean floor. His earlier work demonstrated the role of horizontal sediment transport on the ocean floor. He is currently Director of the Institute of Oceanographic Sciences.
