TitleWolpert, Lewis: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1973
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to our understanding of the mechanisms of animal morphogenesis, he is an engineer by training. In his early work Wolpert added considerably to our knowledge of certain mechanisms, such as the role of the cortex and microfilaments in cell division and amoeboid movement. His major contribution has been on the integration of different mechanisms to produce organised patterns. A first study (with T Gustafson of Stockholm) made echinoderm gastrulation into the paradigm example of animal morphogenesis. This was followed by a series of elegant experiments on pattern development in Hydra and the chick limb bud. These have led to the formulation of a theory of positional information, which has become central to the subject of morphogenesis and pattern formation in recent years.
