CitationF.J. Bergersen is distinguished for his physiological and biochemical studies on leguminous root nodules with special emphasis on the mechanisms for controlling their oxygen requirements, and has elegantly demonstrated the role of leghaemoglobin in this connection. He was among the first to obtain N2 fixation in nodule homogenates and later in bacteroid suspensions and to show directly that NH4 was the primary product of N2 fixation in nodules. He defined the conditions characterising nitrogenase, showing by kinetic studies that the Fe Mo component contained the site for N2 reduction, confirmed elsewhere by Mossbauer and EPR studies. This was followed by a detailed investigation of the associated respiratory reactions. Earlier he pioneered work on legume and non-leguminous nodule structure and fine-structure and did important applied work on Rhizobium and field inoculation methods.
