TitleButterworth, Ian: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his experimental contributions, over many years, in the field of meson and baryon resonances. His research has included the establishment of the quantum numbers of the f-meson, the resolution of the A1 and A2 mesons, and the first clear observation of the Q-meson, as well as the definitive study of strangeness minus one baryon states in the mass range 1.5 to 2.2 GeV/c [to the power of]2 in a series of brilliant experiments with kaon beams in bubble chambers. His investigations have played an essential role in the development of the SU6 quark model of hadrons.
He is the author of authoritative review articles on several aspects of hadron spectroscopy, and he has contributed very significantly to high energy physics research at both the national and international level.
