TitleNelder, John Ashworth: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the improvement and extension of the use of computers for the statistical interpretation of experimental and observational biometric data. He designed and has throughout guided and directed the development of Genstat, an integrated system for multi-stage statistical analysis with an interpretive language containing many novel features, and Glim, an interactive program for fitting generalised linear models. His attention to the need for fitting generalised linear models. His attention to the need for transferability between different computer installations has made these programs widely available and already (1976) Genstat is licensed for use in eight and Glim in fourteen countries. They are enabling scientists in many disciplines, agriculture, biology, psychology, social sciences, etc., to make better and more flexible use of advanced statistical techniques on a wide variety of problems. Nelder's own theoretical work, particularly his unification of the theory of experimental design and analysis and his generalisation of classical linear models, has contributed much to their design and effectiveness.
