TitleO'Hara, Michael John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1980
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in field and experimental aspects of the origin of basaltic and ultrabasic rocks. His precise studies of melting relations at high pressures in systems related to basaltic rocks have elucidated aspects of the chemical nature of the upper mantle and the processes which modify liquids during ascent into the crust of the earth. His experimental work has been correlated closely with studies of the variety of natural liquid types and their inclusions and related rocks of possible mantle origin. Whilst at Edinburgh he led a group which produced important pioneering studies on the phase relations and petrogenesis of lunar igneous rocks.
