Title | Plowright, Walter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1980 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his diverse and significant contributions to veterinary virology. Major achievements were: the development of a live attenuated vaccine against rinderpest leading to the virtual disappearance of this disease from Africa and Asia; introducing a new, productive, epidemiological approach in studying the transmission of virus diseases of wild species to domesticated stock; determining by experimental and field studies the aetiology of African swine fever and indicating that the causative virus is primarily a tick virus; the discovery in 1960 that the agent of malignant catarrhal fever was a cell-associated herpes virus of the lymphoproliferative type; and identifying factors in cytomegalovirus infections of pigs and respiratory infections of horses that were important for reducing their damaging effects. These and other examples of Plowright's work have greatly advanced the understanding of diseases of major economic importance. |
