TitleRees, Sir David Allan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1978
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the chemistry and biochemistry of carbohydrates. His early work was on algal carbohydrates, notably on enzymic attack and interconversions of polysaccharide sulphates. This was followed by investigations of pectins and other polysaccharides in higher plants, including changes during seed germination. A series of papers on carrageenans illustrates his deep knowledge of structure and reactions of carbohydrates and this led to his major contribution, shape and conformation of polysaccharides in solution. This is a chemical and mathematical treatment of the problem and has opened up the study of conformation in a fresh light. An understanding of the shape and conformation of polysaccharides and glucoproteins is of considerable biological importance. His work at Unilever includes molecular cohesion in plant cell walls, the shape of glycoproteins and their role in surface adhesion phenomena in both plant and animal walls.
