TitleSargent, Wallace Leslie William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1978
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr. Sargent is distinguished for his achievements in observational astronomy. Early in his career, he carried out fundamental analyses of the abundances of various types of peculiar stars and used his results to test theories of stellar evolution and nucleosynthesis and the origin of the abundance anomalies in magnetic stars. For some years he has taken responsibility for the supernova search at Palomar. More recently he has worked on extragalactic objects. His studies of Seyfert galaxies and quasi-stellar objects are of fundamental importance. Together with Alex Boksenberg he has recently been attempting to elucidate the problem of the origin of the absorption in QSOs. He has also been working extensively on clusters of galaxies, on evidence for glactic halos, and on radio galaxies.
Sargent is a very careful and imaginative scientist. He works on difficult problems with considerable success, and is a widely respected observer at Palomar, Kitt Peak and Siding Springs. He is one of the leading observational astronomers in the world today.
