TitleClarke, Bryan Campbell: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1979
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to population genetics and evolutionary biology. His early work on the snail Cepaea led him to propose that apostatic selection by predators is an important cause of polymorphism, and to support this by data on the frequencies of snail morphs, and on the behaviour of the predators. He made theoretical contributions to the study of clines, of frequency and density-dependent selection, and of host-parasite relations. His work on the snail Partula has contributed significantly to our understanding of speciation. He has been one of the main proponents of the view that protein polymorphism is maintained selectively. Pursuing this idea, he is now engaged with others in a detailed study of the ADH polymorphism in Drosophila, involving sequencing, genetic mapping and measurement of selection.
