TitleCowan, William Maxwell: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1980
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr Cowan is distinguished for his contribution to our understanding of the structure, connexions and development of the central nervous system. He has elucidated many of the connexions of the hippocampus and hypothalamus, and of particular importance is his finding that only those fibres which end in the septum arise in the hippocampus and those going to the mammillary nuclei originate in the subiculum. In meticulous studies of the developing nervous system in the chick he has attempted to define some of the factors governing the organization within the visual pathway and of the significance of cell loss that occurs in many sites during maturation. By introducing the use of labelled amino acids for tracing fibre connections in the central nervous system and in developing automated methods for quantitative studies he has helped considerably to advance the techniques available for neurohistological investigation.
