TitleRoberts, Lewis Edward John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1980
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationIn his early research work at Oxford, in Canada and subsequently at Harwell, Lewis Roberts made notable contributions to solid state chemistry, particularly to the thermodynamics and phase equilibria of the actinide oxides and to the role of surface chemistry and defect structure in solid state processes such as the oxidation of uranium dioxide. His abilities and combination of the scientific insight with a clear grasp of the technological problems of the nuclear industry inevitably led him into management and, after directing the work of a large group of chemists, he took charge, in 1966, of developing from scratch a research programme oriented towards British Industry. This was so successful, and Roberts' leadership so outstanding, that he was an obvious choice for the Directorship of Harwell in 1976. Since that time he has proved himself a gifted Director; the new orientation of Harwell has been confirmed and consolidated. Despite the breadth of the Laboratory's work, serving the nuclear industry, general industry and government while maintaining a good proportion of basic research, it is noteworthy that Roberts directs it with the natural ease that comes from an active, curious and disciplined mind.
