CitationDistinguished for his researches on the naked protoplasts derived from the cells of higher plants. This work has included the elaboration of new methods for the release of protoplasts from cell walls, and has demonstrated the ways in which protoplasts may take up external materials such as viruses. His work on protoplasts has also been concerned with their physiological condition and capacity to regenerate into plants. He has also demonstrated some of the conditions that promote protoplast fusion and was among the pioneers in achieving interspecific protoplast fusions leading to the production of somatic hybrid plants.
