Title | Guillery, Rainer Walter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1979 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his studies of the brain, especially the hypothalamus and the visual system. In his early research Guillery was one of the first to use axonal degeneration techniques in work on the hypothalamus; he also pioneered electron microscopy of the central nervous system and helped to define the criteria for distinguishing degenerating nerves. He later turned to the lateral geniculate nucleus in the visual pathway where he defined the cell types, showed a more complex lamination than was formerly though, described the abnormalities in the squinting Siamese cat and other albino animals and produced evidence to support the theory that the changes resulting from monocular eyelid closure are due to competition between the eyes. In the considerable advance of knowledge and understanding of the visual pathway during recent years he has played a leading part and made some of the most important and reliable contributions. |
