TitleHiggs, Peter Ware: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1980
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationThe name of Prof. P.W. Higgs has passed into the language of physics with his profound contribution embodied in his famous papers on spontaneous symmetry breaking published in 1964. These provided a key ingredient for the construction of the gauge theories that underlie all current understanding of particle interactions, and are still among the most frequently cited of all papers on particle physics. A characteristic feature of spontaneously broken gauge theories is the appearance of what are universally known as Higgs particles, first predicted in these papers. Prof. Higgs has also contributed significantly to molecular physics and quantum gravity and played an important role in the organisation and supervision of research in theoretical particle physics in Edinburgh.
