Title | Powell, Michael James David: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1976 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Powell is one of the leaders in numerical analysis and his research is central to the rapid development of computing methods for nonlinear equations and optimisation that has occurred recently. For instance, his work in the early 1960s allowed the number of variables in optimisation calculations to increase by about a factor of ten. He has developed one of the main techniques for nonlinear constraints on variables in minimisation problems. He has originated much of the known convergence theory of optimisation algorithus and equation solvers for the case when iterative methods are begun far from the solution. Also he has published several good papers on approximation theory and methods. He is sufficiently interested in applications to provide computer programs for most of the new techniques he develops. Thus his research is of direct value to the numerical solution of many real problems. |
