Date1977
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his major contributions to the application of nuclear magnetic resonance and mass spectroscopy to structural determination. His early studies on the n.m.r. spectra of steroids established numerous useful correlations between structure and established numerous useful correlations between structure and coupling constants. His introduction of solvent shift methods and his exploitation of "shift reagents" in the drastic simplification of n.m.r. spectra have resulted in their adoption worldwide as standard spectroscopic structural probes. Together with Djerassi and Budzikiewicz he laid a solid foundation for the application of mass spectrometry as a structural tool for complex molecules and has made significant contributions to the application of this powerful technique to biologically interesting substances, e.g. in the sequencing of peptides and proteins, notably ribitol dehydrogenase. He is currently engaged in a fundamental investigation of kinetic energy release in unimolecular reactions by mass spectroscopic methods. His scope and versatility are well illustrated by his concomitant synthetic achievements, e.g. the hormone antheridiol and the hydroxylated metabolites of Vitamin D. A list of 195 papers is appended.
