Title | Berridge, Sir Michael John: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1979 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | After publishing a series of researches of very high quality on the excretory system in insects and highly original work on the recovery of water and ions from the rectum of higher flies, he deliberately sought a model system in which to unravel what happens when a cell is stimulated by a hormone. The system chosen was the salivary gland of the blowfly. Perhaps the most striking discovery has been the interaction of cyclic nucleotides with calcium in the control of secretory activity. In the course of this work light was thrown on the possible action of hallucinogenic drugs; a new hypothesis of control of cell division put forward; but the ambitious central theme remains a complete description of the working and the control of a transporting epithelium. Much has already been achieved. |
