TitleCalladine, Christopher Reuben: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1981
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in several areas of structural mechanics. He has made important contributions to both the elastic and plastic analysis and design of shell structures, to the prediction of the creep behaviour of structures, to the buckling of structures, and to the field of soil mechanics. More recently he has turned his expertise to molecular biology and has carried out a mechanical analysis of the construction of bacterial flagella which explained their polymorphism and predicted new forms later observed. This work has greatly enhanced understanding of the switching of waveforms during motion. His work is characterised by a remarkable versatility, and a penetrating physical insight coupled with relatively simple but effective mathematics.
