TitleEdwards, Robert Geoffrey: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1983
DescriptionCitation handwritten
CitationEdwards has made a great contribution to our understanding of the basic reproductive physiology in animals and man, with particular reference to the processes of oogenesis, ovulation and fertilisation. He successfully applied the knowledge that he had gained in animals to develop techniques for oocyte recovery, in vitro fertilisation and embryo transfer in women. The methods that he has pioneered are now coming into use throughout the world for the treatment of infertility due to tubal occlusion. Edwards has also made an important contribution to the ethical debate surrounding this new technology which, after initial resistance, has now found almost universal acceptance. His research, coupled with the clinical skill of Mr. Patrick Steptoe, has opened up a new era in human obstetrics.
