TitleGulland, John Alan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1983
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the mathematical analysis of the dynamics of fish populations and commercial fisheries. He has combined mathematical skills of a high order with a penetrating understanding of fisheries to provide new insights into the response of fish stocks to exploitation by man. He has developed a number of original techniques for fishery assessment which are now in world-wide use. He has done much to bring together economics and biology in the interpretation of commercial fisheries and in formulating principles for fisheries management. He has applied these ideas and methods to the analysis of marine mammals and was a member of the group which first demonstrated unequivocally the true state of Antarctic whales. Among his contributions to fisheries science, arising from his work with the FAO, are assessments of the potential productivity of the world resources of fish and shellfish, which is the standard reference. For much of his career he has been involved in the provision of scientific advice on fisheries to international regulatory bodies, a field in which he is among the leading authorities in the world.
