TitlePerham, Richard Nelson: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1978
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationRichard Perham is distinguished for his contributions to our knowledge of the chemistry of proteins in multimeric assemblies. His novel methods of probing topography have provided the chemical counterpart to X-ray diffraction studies and have been instrumental in providing an understanding of secondary forces, in particular of ionic interactions, in the structure, activity and self-assembly of multimeric enzymes and of tobacco mosaic virus. His work on the pyruvate dehydrogenase multienzyme complex has opened up the precise chemical study of such enzymes and uncovered a remarkable system of active-site-coupling that can provide a new mechanism of rate enhancement in a multimeric enzyme.
