TitleRoberts, Sir Gareth Gwyn: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1982
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to semiconductor device physics, and in particular for his studies of the device potential of organic materials. After early studies of conduction in a variety of relatively unknown semiconductors, and of the electronic properties of semi-insulators, Roberts developed an interest in molecular electronics. He was the first scientist to appreciate the versatility of Langmuir-Blodgett films, a topic which had been dormant for many years. He personally designed a new form of Langmuir trough which has opened the field to many research workers. He has demonstrated that a series of electronic and optical devices can show improved performance by the incorporation of L-B films, and his example has stimulated others to invent further devices.
