TitleSmith, Frank Thomas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1982
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to theoretical fluid mechanics in several major fields: (i) the calculation of viscous flows, including those associated with constricted, indented, curved or branching pipes; (ii) the theory of boundary-layer separation and re-attachment in the aerodynamics of bodies; (iii) the treatment of finite-amplitude wavy perturbations and critical layers in growing boundary-layer and shear flows, and in pipes and channels, as a precursor to turbulence; (iv) inviscid aerodynamics of trailing-edge and wake flows, and of transonic flow.
His work is characterized by a penetrating insight into the nonlinear asymptotic and computational analyses of the equations of fluid flow, with a deep appreciation of their relevance to observation.

    Collection highlights

Browse the records of some of our collections, which cover all branches of science and date from the 12th century onwards. These include the published works of Fellows of the Royal Society, personal papers of eminent scientists, letters and manuscripts sent to the Society or presented at meetings, and administrative records documenting the Society's activities since our foundation in 1660.
